Patches, a shelter cat, made news about this time last year due to his gigantic size. At a whopping forty pounds, he earned the moniker “the largest cat anyone has ever seen.” However, Patches’s weight was negatively affecting his health, necessitating a much-needed change. At an astonishing 40.3 pounds, Patches made waves at Richmond Animal Care and Control on April 19, 2023. He weighed 42 pounds when he was first turned in, only a few pounds less than the record. His “gloriously gluttonous body” was hilariously cherished by the shelter, and Patches gained an abundance of love and attention on the internet.
Still, it was clear that Patches needed to lose a few pounds in order to get healthier. The shelter put him on a customized diet and training regimen and found him an owner, Kay Ford, who was determined to keep Patches on track with his fitness goals.

Patches had been working hard to remove those extra pounds over the last year. Through a Facebook page named “Patches’ Journey,” Ford has been conscientiously providing Patches’s supporters with updates on his progress. Weekly weigh-ins are included in the reports, which show Patches’s ongoing weight loss.
Ford says that she thought it was important to share Patches’s story with everyone, stating, “Let them be a part of it; they want to know what’s going on.” Patches’s progress is marked by these much-anticipated Wednesday reports.

Patches achieved an amazing feat when he weighed in at 25.47 pounds at the most recent weigh-in. Ford declares, “He’s lost a whole cat!” with pride. It’s incredible, and he’s been an absolute trooper the entire time.
Ford provides insightful guidance for fellow cat owners who want to assist their adorable companions in becoming lighter. She advises sticking to a regular meal schedule as opposed to “free feeding,” being mindful of the calories and nutritional value of cat food, and working with a veterinarian to create a customized weight loss strategy.
