The laboring Chihuahua was struck by a car and wound up at Fuzz Ball Animal Rescue in Hermiston, Oregon.
The dog was rushed to the Oregon Trail Veterinary Clinic to have her limb removed because of injuries sustained in the accident, according to the rescue’s Facebook page.
Xena’s baby was too big for a vaginal birth, so she too needed an urgent C-section.
The wonderful conclusion to this terrifying story was revealed by the rescue on Wednesday: both the Chihuahua mother and her healthy baby boy made it through their surgeries.
“It’s incredible to see how well both are doing! This really is a miracle. The rescue shared a picture of the mother and child on Facebook. “To have made it through being abandoned, knocked down, giving birth to a puppy that was too huge to come out, and then having to have a c-section and have a leg amputated while in shock! These tiny marvels are amazing!
